England and Sri lanka are two very contrast teams. One team relies more on spin and never had those fiery fast bowlers, England team is batting heavy team, and that makes the contest between these two teams always good to watch.
Lets look at how the matches in World Cup panned out between these two teams –
1) 1983 Prudential World Cup – England put a good total of 333 runs in 60 overs, and though Srilanka tried their very best, they fell short of 47 runs, but not a one sided match for sure.
2) Reliance World Cup 1987 – In the 10th match of Reliance World Cup played at Peshawar, Pakistan, England once again turned out to be on winning side.
Batting first England made 296 runs, and Sri lanka reached no where near to the revised target of 267 runs in 45 overs, as they only managed 158 runs.
3) Wills World Cup 1996 – Sri lanka finally had their first taste of victory as they chased 235 runs in 40 overs against England in first quarter final. Eventually they not only won this quarter final, but they won the World Cup too.
4) ICC World Cup 1999 – In the first match played at lords, England easily chased down a low target of 204 runs and started their campaign on high.
5) ICC World Cup 2007 – This 33rd match in ICC World Cup 2007 between England and Sri lanka was cracker of a contest.
Sri lanka batted first and set target of 236 runs but with 12 needed of final over and well settled Ravi Bopara on crease who hit boundary on the second, it all came down to final ball.
England needed 3 runs to win and 2 for tie but Fernando bowled Ravi Bopara on final delivery to give his team much needed win against English man.
6) ICC World Cup 2011– Sri lanka made light work of the England in the 4th quarter final in Colombo with a win by 10 wickets.
Chasing 230 runs, Sri lanka openers made sure that none of their batsman from the dug out had to come to play, as both the openers, Upul Tharanga and Tilkaratne Dilshan got to 100.
7) ICC World Cup 2015– Sri lanka again played some great cricket to chase down a good score of 309 runs of England.
Thirimane and Sangakarra got a century to their names as Sri lanka won the match with 16 balls remaining.
