Result of last 4 clashes between South Africa and Sri lanka in World Cup

Lets look at the past World Cup encounters between Sri lanka and SouthAfrica –

1) 1999 World Cup – In the 9th match of World Cup 1999, South africa defeated Sri lanka quite comprehensively by 89 runs.

Batting first South Africa even didn’t reach the 200 run mark and made only 199. At the half stage, what may would have looked like bread and butter for Sri lanka, the proteas pace trio of Pollock, Kallis and Lance Klusener shared 9 wickets among them and bundled Srilanka for meagre 110 runs in 35 overs.

Lance Klusener who won 4 Man of the match in 1999 World Cup was declared Man of the match for this match. Not only he took 3 wickets but made 52 runs of 45 balls coming at number 7 position. What a great all-rounder to play this beautiful game ever.

2) 2003 World Cup – This close contest in the 40th match played at Durban between these two teams ended up in tie.
Srilanka made 268 runs batting first with the help of marvellous innings of 124 runs of 129 balls from Marvan Atapattu at the top of the order.

Chasing 268 runs, South Africa was looking good with 229 runs in 45 overs, with 45th over went for 13 runs with Mark Boucher playing at 45 runs and Lance Klusener on 1 run.

With 39 required of last 5 overs and Klusener and well settled Boucher on crease, South Africa would have fancied their chances but rain played spoil-sport as there was no more balls bowled after the 45th over and DLS par score declared the match tied.

3) 2015 World Cup – In the 1st quarter final held at Sydney, South Africa won this by 9 wickets to get into semifinal.

Srilanka was all out for just 133 runs and SouthAfrica chased it easily in 18 overs.

4) 2019 World Cup – Repeating their win of winnning by 9 wickets, South Africa won the 35th match against Srilanka in 2019 World Cup also by 9 wickets.

Srilanka batted first and managed just 203 runs which was chased easily in 37 overs.

None of the Proteas batsman got to hundred as Du Plessis was stranded at 96 runs.
