Eastern Indian state of Odisha is renowned for its incredibly rich culture, heritage, and
natural beauty. However, the state has also given birth to some of the best cricketers for
the Indian national team and other international squads. In this post, we’ll take a closer
look at some of the most well-known cricketers from Odisha who have left an impression
on the world stage.

1)Debashish Mohanty – On July 20, 1976, Debashis Mohanty was born in Bhubaneswar, the state capital of Odisha.

He was a right-arm medium-fast bowler with good accuracy and variety who could swing the ball both ways and trouble the batsmen.

In 1997, he played in his first Test match for India against Sri Lanka and finished with four wickets.

In the one-day format, where he played 45 games and took 57 wickets at an average of 32.35, he was more productive.

He was a member of the Indian team that advanced to the 1999 World Cup semifinals in
England, where he dazzled with his displays against Kenya and England. He stopped
playing cricket in 2008 and started working as the coach of the Odisha Ranji squad.

2)Pragyan Ojha – On September 5, 1986, Pragyan Ojha was born in Khordha, Odisha. He is a conventional
left-arm spinner with a classical movement and a convincing arm ball.

In 2008, he played in his first ODI for India against Bangladesh, taking four wickets. He continued to play for India in 18 Tests, 24 ODIs, and 6 T20Is, taking 113, 21, and 10 wickets in each match. He has the
most wickets for India during their historic Test series victory in Sri Lanka in 2010, taking 16
in three games.

He was also crucial to India’s 2013 home sweep of Australia, taking 19 wickets in four games and winning match-winning honors.

In the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he played for the Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians and earned the Purple Cap for taking the most wickets (21) in the 2010 season, he was also a successful bowler.

In February 2020, he declared his retirement from both first-class and international cricket.

3)Shiv Sunder Das – On November 5, 1977, Shiv Sunder Das was born in Bhubaneswar. He is an opening right-handed batter with a compact style and a reliable demeanour.

In 2000, he made his India debut in a Test match against Bangladesh, and in his second game, against Zimbabwe, he hit a century.

For India, he participated in 23 Test matches, scoring 1326 runs at an average of 38.76, including two centuries and nine fifty-pluses. He was a member of the Indian side that toured Australia in 2003–2004. Against a strong bowling attack, he achieved two fifties.

He also participated in domestic cricket for East Zone and Odisha, where he amassed over 8000 runs in first-class and List A games.

He retired from cricket in 2013 and became a coach for the Odisha Ranji team and a batting coach for the Indian women’s team.

4)Sanjay Raul – On October 6, 1976, Sanjay Raul was born in Cuttack, Odisha. He can keep wickets in
addition to being a right-arm off-break bowler and middle-order batsman.

He played his first ODI for India against Pakistan in Toronto in 1998, however neither his batting nor his
bowling had much of an impact.

He only participated in two ODIs for India, during which he amassed eight runs and one wicket. He was a productive player for Odisha, though, scoring over 5000 runs and grabbing over 100 wickets in first-class and List A games. Additionally, in 2001–2002, he led Odisha to their first-ever Ranji Trophy quarterfinal participation. In 2009, he stopped playing cricket and started officiating matches for the Odisha Cricket Association.

5)Anshuman Rath – On November 5, 1997, Anshuman Rath was born in Bhubaneswar. He represents Hong Kong internationally as an opening left-handed batsman and on occasion as a
wicketkeeper.

When he was seven years old, his family relocated to Hong Kong, where he began playing cricket. In an ODI match against Papua New Guinea in 2014, he made his debut for Hong Kong and recorded a half-century.

For Hong Kong, he has participated in 18 ODIs and 20 T20Is, totaling 852 and 437 runs with one century and seven fifty-pluses in each game. In the 2018 Asia Cup, he also led Hong Kong and hit 85 runs against India and 73 runs against Pakistan.

6)Biplab Samantray – On December 14, 1988, Biplab Samantray was born in Cuttack.

He is a right-handed middle order batsman as well as an off-spin and medium-pace bowler. He made his domestic cricket debut for Odisha in 2008, and since then, in first-class and List A games, he has
amassed over 3000 runs and taken over 50 wickets.

He has also participated in the IPL with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he played for nine games, scored 124 runs, and claimed three wickets. He was a vital member of the East Zone team that defeated Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy final in 2012, scoring a critical 55 not out.
