After Asia Cup win defeating their old-rival Pakistan in the high octane final, Indian team is back to business again, this time in the long format as they started to host West Indies in the 2 match test series starting October 2.

Shubhman Gill was who as the deputy of Surya Kumar Yadav in the Asia Cup, is back in the front seat in test team, as captain.

The first match has already started and West Indies team in all sorts of trouble. Batting first they only managed to score 162 runs and in return Indian Captain Shubman Gill struck a new 47 year old record.

Shubman Gill scored 50 runs before he was caught playing a reverse sweep. But with yet another half century to his name, Gill matched Sunil Gavaskar record to register a 50+ score in the debut innings as captain on the home soil.

Gavaskar though still sit handsomely at the top, as he made 205 against West Indies in 1978 at Wankhede. But Shubhman and Sunil Gavaskar remained the only two Indian Captain to score 50+ runs on the debut innings as captain on the home soil.

After taking over as captain, Gill has been on top form in Tests. His 754 runs eclipsed Graham Gooch’s 1990 mark of 752, the highest by any batter in an India–England Test series.

He has also bettered Sunil Gavaskar’s 732 runs as captain against West Indies in 1978-79, a record that stood for 47 years, and is now within reach of Sir Don Bradman’s 810 runs for a captain in one series.
