India is a big country and have most number of cricket fans in the world. Almost every child dream is to play for the country.
The Indian domestic cricket is vast yet lean, to filter out the best players to be picked for international cricket.
India have 3 major domestic tournaments. Ranji Trophy is a 4 day red ball tournament, Vijay Hazare is 50 over tournament and the most popular of the lot Syed Mushtaq is played in T20 format.
Lets look at the highest runs scored in all of these tournaments:-
1)Highest runs scored in Ranji Trophy:- Hyderabad made staggering 944 runs for the loss of 6 wickets against their neighbour state Andhra in the 1993/94 edition of Ranji trophy.
One of Hyderabad batsman M. V. Sridhar went on to score triple hundred and got to 366 runs before getting out and other batsman Noel David scored a unbeaten double century of 207.
Unfortunately M.V Sridhar passed away on 2017 at the age of 51 because of a heart attack.
Noel David on the other hand, was a bowling all rounder, a decent off breaker and a lower order batsman. He represented India in 4 ODI matches debuting against West Indies as replacement of Javagal Srinath.
Interesting story on his selection in Team India for tour of West Indies when Sachin Tendulkar asked – ” David who?”. Noel David later clarified it was not Sachin Tendulkar but Ajit Wadekar who said that.
Later former BCCI secretary Jaywant Lele confirmed there was something fishy about the selection of the unheard-of David.
2) Highest score in Vijay Hazare trophy :- 506, yes tough to believe but this is the highest score by any team in the Vijay Hazare trophy.
Vijay Hazare trophy which superseded Ranji One day Cup came into existence in 2007.
Named after Vijay Samuel Hazare who captained India in between 1951 and 1953, Vijay Hazare trophy also is keenly observed by national selectors.
This particular match was played in 2022 and Tamilnadu batsman made sure they score heavily against comparatively weaker side, Arunachal Pradesh.
Narayan Jagdeeshan scored 277 and Sai Sudarshan Sudarshan got to 154.
In second innings, Arunachal Pradesh was bundled up in mere 71 runs.
3) Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy :- The domestic T20 cricket tournament is a pave way for young talents around India to get spotted and play IPL as this is the tournament which happens just before IPL auction and provides the talent scouts with the right talent they need for their team.
BCCI started the tournament after T20 cricket came into existence. With India playing the first ever T20 on 1 December 2006/2007, the first edition of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy started from 3rd April 2007.
After that it is being scheduled before IPL auction, to give the players and talent scouts to do the job for themselves.
