There have been only a handful of brother duos who have represented their country at the highest level in the game of cricket. Amongst the current players Sam Curran and Tom Curran is a duo who have represented England at the highest level, Shaun Marsh and Mitchel Marsh of Australia is also another duo who have been playing for the longest time.In this article we will talk about pair of brothers who have scored century in the same test innings of a match.
Ian and Greg Chappel – They became the first pair of brothers in the world to score a ton in the same innings of a test match. In a match against England in 1972 at the Oval, Ian scored 118 while his younger brother Greg scored 113 which later helped their team to secure a win over England by 5 wickets. Australia were 2 wickets down for 34 when brothers came at crease but they added more than 200 runs together to take their team to a respectable total.
Ian and Greg Chappel – Two years later in 1974 at Wellington in a match against New Zealand, the duo again scored a century in the 1st innings. Ian got out after scoring 145 while Greg remained not out at 247. If this was not enough the duo again scored a century in the 2nd innings of the same test match making life really difficult for Kiwi bowlers.
Sadiq and Mushtaq Mohammad – The Pakistani brother duo scored a century in 1976 against New Zealand in Hyderabad(Sindh). Both Sadiq and Mushtaq remained unbeaten at 103 and 101 respectively when Pakistan declared at 473 in the first innings. The pace attack of Pakistan proved too good for New Zealand as they conceded a follow on and lost the match by 10 wickets.
Andy and Grant Flower – In a match against Pakistan in 1995 at Harare, the Zimbabwean duo added around 270 runs for the 4th wicket in the 1st innings of the match. Andy who was also the captain of the team scored 156 while his brother Grant scored an unbeaten 201 and took Zimbabwe to a mammoth total of 544 which proved to be too many for Pakistan. Andy was also named Man of the Match.
Steve And Mark Waugh – The renowned Aussie duo who played an instrumental role in making Australia a juggernaut in world cricket in the 90s has also scored ton against West Indies in 1995 at Kingston. Mark Waugh scored 126 while his elder brother scored 200 which took the total of the team to 531. Australia won the match easily and Steve also became the Man of the Series.
Steve and Mark Waugh – They again scored centuries in the Oval test match of 2001 Ashes. In the 5th and the last test Steve scored an unbeaten 157 while Mark scored 120 and Australia ultimately won that match as well as the Ashes by 4-1.
Shaun and Mitchel Marsh – The latest pair of brothers who have scored a century in the same innings of a test match is Shaun Marsh and Mitchel Marsh. In the 2017- 2018 Ashes which proved humiliating for England as they lost 4-0, the duo scored a ton in the Sydney test match Shaun scored 156 while his younger brother Mitchel scored a quick 101 on 140 balls. Australia managed to score 649 which was too many for England as they suffered an innings defeat.
