Aavishkar Salvi. The name which every Indian fan must have remember for the similarity with the action of legendary “Glen Mcgrath”.
Aavashikar Salvi had a very sharp incline to his career when he went from a backup seamer of his club to play India A and then for India in a year.
He debuted for India against Bangladesh in April, 2003. Bangladesh used to be good team before to try new bowlers and batsman, these days its Ireland for India.
He bowled very economically and took 2 for 15 runs in 7 overs as Bangladesh bundled to mere 76 runs chasing 276 runs in his debut match. Bangladesh just focused on the last 76 and forgot to make the 200.
In the second match, Bangladesh batted first, and crawled upto a score of 207 runs but Aavishkar Salvi gave away 51 runs in 10 overs for a wicket in such a low scoring game. Such a interesting match for him after the promising start to his career.
In the third match, against Southafrica in the same TVS cup, India made just 215 runs batting first against SouthAfrica, Southafrica went on to win the match but Salvi once again impressed with 31 runs in 8.4 overs with 1 wicket.
After that he got injured and he was given a match after 7 months against Australia, but he was just bowling in mid 120s and gave away 23 runs in 3 overs in a spin friendly pitch where other seamers like current Indian team selector Ajit Agarkar and Zaheer Khan also were taken under the radar by Aussies.
Now that was the last time we saw him in Indian colours. Just 4 matches in total.
A tall pacer who shot to limelight in 1 year and then vanished away faster than he came to limelight, we can’t even say limelight but he played for India and that is a long road for a club cricketer.
Talking about his post international cricket life, he continued to play upto 2013, even after playing his last international match in 2003, that’s more than 10 years of domestic cricket after he played 4 ODIs for India.
Post retirement, he is in coaching. He coached Pondicherry cricket team in 2018 and then he was again elected as their head coach in 2020 as the first season with Salvi as coach went well for Pondicherry. After that he got an opportunity from Oman.
Oman is a rich country in middle east next to Saudi Arabia in map, Salvi joined them as fast bowling coach in 2020 and is with them on assignment basis.
He also have played in 4 IPL seasons. 2009-2012 with Delhi Daredevils, with a total Ipl income of around 2 crores.
In 2009 season, his dream came true when he bowled along with Glen Mcgrath in IPL, in delhi daredevils.
He is just 41. And at the age of 41, he has 4 ODIs to his name, played first class cricket till 2013, and then head coach of a Ranji team for two seasons and then now with international cricket team of Oman and adds to that 4 IPL seasons says that Salvi has managed it well even after a very short international career.
If all this was not enough, he also holds a PHD in astrophysics. So not just muscles, Salvi has got the brain on his head too.
