Several bowlers around the world are reported to have suspect bowling action which is also known as Throwing or Chucking. Such bowlers are then banned by ICC from bowling until they fix their bowling action. In this article we shall look at 10 bowlers who had suspect bowling action.
The first in the list is Sunil Narine. The West Indian mystery spinner has been reported multiple times for illegal bowling action, the latest being during IPL 2020 for bending his arms more than 15 degrees but later he was cleared and allowed to bowl.
The Second in the list is Saeed Ajmal. The Pakistani off-spinner was banned in 2014 by ICC from bowling for illegal bowling action.While bowling Doosra, he also broke the rule of 15 degrees which was permissible. Later he remodeled his action but was not as effective.
The third in the list is Shoaib Akhtar. The fastest bowler in the world was also reported to have a suspect action. He was reported multiple times 1st in 1999 and 2nd in 2003 and then in 2005 but he then made changes to his action and was cleared to bowl.
The fourth in the list is Sri lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan. The off spinner who picked 800 test wickets had controversial bowling action and was subjected to clear the bowling test multiple times in his career to ensure that he bowl in the same way in the match as during testing.
The fifth in the list is Harbhajan Singh. The Turbanator who used to bowl off spin was reported to have illegal bowling action while bowling Doosra and was investigated by ICC. He later was allowed to bowl only the conventional off spin and not Doosra.
The Sixth in the list is Marlon Samuels. The West Indian batter who occasionally used to bowl off spin was also reported for suspect bowling action in 2013 during India tour. He was later allowed to bowl only off spin and not the faster deliveries.
The seventh in the list is Kane Williamson. The modern era great batter of New Zealand was called out for suspect action in 2014. Later he reworked on his action and was cleared to bowl.
The eighth in the list is Shane Shillingford. The West Indian all-rounder has been reported twice and also banned twice for illegal bowling action. Though he has returned to bowling but due to changes in action he could not perform that well.
The ninth in the list is Sachithra Senanayake. The Sri lankan off spinner has been reported twice for illegal bowling action and also banned once in 2014. He made changes to his action and was cleared to play for Sri lanka but his performance did not match expectations.
The tenth in the list is Mohammad Hafeez. The Pakistani batsman who is nicknamed Professor used to bowl off spin and has been reported for suspect bowling action twice in his career and was also banned from bowling. But in 2015 he cleared the test and now is allowed to bowl.
