There have been some unfortunate incidents when birds were killed in cricket ground when they were struck by a ball in the field.
Lets rewind the 5 such incidents when a bird was killed in cricket:-
Jack Rudolph – In 2009, playing a county t20 match, Jack Rudolph turned into a sniper only to take the life of a innocent pigeon with his throw.
He smiled and then took away the pigeon thinking what he did wrong last night.
Kapil Dev– India’s first genuine allrounder had to swallow the guilt of killing a big seagull in Australian tour of 1986.
As per reports, the equation between Indian and Australian players were slightly off at that particular tour and the Australian players were not really pleasant with Kapil Dev killing a “Big Kangaroo Seagull”.
When Kapil Dev asked for a water break after the unfortunate incident, Alan Border simply said no and asked him to carry off his business like nothing happened.
Easily said than done.
Jahangir khan – This memorial incident happened in 1936 when Jahangir khan was bowling to Tom Pierce.
Tom pierce played a defensive shot, but the pigeon quietly watching it from behind the stumps didn’t know that the round leather will struck him so fast, he will have no time to react.
He was declared dead on the spot.
The bird was stuffed and attached to cricket ball and is kept in lords memorial gallery.
Do visit it, if you are around lords, next time.
Sachin Tendulkar – The god of cricket, also was the part of this unfortunate event when his shot struck a pigeon. Mahela Jaywardhane soon picked it and send it for the treatment.
Since the shot was not timed well which is very rare for Master blaster, the pigeon survived alright.
Ajay Jadeja – In 1999 world cup which featured the logo with Debashish Mohanty action, Jadeja edged a bowl and it hit directly the pigeon, killing him on the spot. A real unfortunate incident.
